Sustainability Toward Net Zero, Fort Jackson, SC (U.S. Army)
Stell’s Solid Waste Management Team at Fort Jackson supported the installation’s Net Zero Waste program and outreach initiatives. Our team was continuously moving Fort Jackson’s solid waste management program toward a Net Zero Waste goal by promoting forward-thinking policies, consistency in daily practices, and significant, quantifiable goals. We tracked and maintained records on solid waste data, studied historical trends, and determined cost-effective and efficient means of reduction, reuse, and recycling. Through innovation and outreach, our team was instrumental in achieving a diversion rate of 33% of 13 tons of generated municipal solid waste, bringing the installation ever closer to the Executive Order 13514 goal. Through execution of the Qualified Recycling Program (QRP), our team reduced the amount of materials landfilled, generated funds from sales of materials, and supported installation-wide environmental stewardship. We facilitated reduction, reuse, and recycling becoming part of this mission at this installation. The team was awarded Honorable Mention for the Society of American Military Engineers’ Sustainability Award: Towards Net Zero.
